My neighbor, Abe, has lived in his house, next door, long enough to have known all four owners of my house. And this house was built in 1910.
And what an incredible life he lived. Tennis champ, world sailor, university professor, painter, psychologist. Made a mean old-fashioned. Always had a great story to tell. Loved irony. Snuck treats to our dog. Huge supporter of the neighborhood block party – never missed them. We were just plain lucky to have him next door.
Abe celebrated his 95th birthday at the end of October, but his health failed him a couple of weeks ago. His mind was still sharp as ever. I shot this, mid story, while he was sitting out in back of his house, enjoying the birds and the sunshine. He used to spend long afternoons out there. He had just returned from the hospital and his whole family was in town for Thanksgiving.
Abe passed away Monday in his home.
