Getting Smarter

Halloween is more than ten days away and we need to replenish the candy supply. For the second time.

Retailers put out the Halloween stuff before summer is over, and suckers like me feel the need to take advantage of the timing, thinking I’m getting a deal when I’m really spending twice as much when the stash magically and prematurely vanishes (Here’s part of the reason, ya think?). More and more I’m feeling rushed by the (retailing) season, instead of feeling the rush of the season. I hate that. Halloween is usually big around this house. I used to really plan and do it up. But now, it seems I’m just barely finding a way fit it into my list of things to do so that it isn’t missed.

While the retailers are trying to compress time, the demands on our lives seem to continually increase. Since I cannot control the time or the demands, I have to get smart about the priority in which I deal with all of it. It’s taken me a long time to grasp this, and I still haven’t mastered what to do about it. But this project, in it’s own small way, is really helping me force the issue. Unchecked, the time dedicated to planning, taking and posting a daily photo could consume more of the day than I have to spare. Yet by it’s nature, this challenge is a daily practice, and with a little attention I may get it right and find a balance from time to time.

That would be sweet.

The Manual
Page 47 – Mode P, Programmed Auto. I long ago figured this one out – without the manual – because there is nothing to figure out. It works great, but the best thing I ever did as a photographer was stop using this mode.

The Images
Ran across this blog about Vivian Maier and her undiscovered work. She was a street photographer in the 1950s who passed away earlier this year. Fantastic captures.

Love Smarties and this shot so much that I looked for a bag of Smarties at the grocery store! Couldn't find them.
